The area of outer Croatian islands, with its natural and cultural values, is one of the most important oases in the Mediterranean.
Alternatura is a tourist agency that promotes development of tourism on the island of Vis, but only through activities that respect the nature of the island. Our tours consist of taking tourists to see natural beauties and cultural heritage. In that way we are trying to give tourists a chance to fully comprehend the uniqueness of living on the island of Vis.
All our adventure tours and adventure excursions are created with utmost care for our island Vis , its traditions and nature. We strongly believe that tourism and traditional life can coexist and that both, travelers and local people can benefit from it under the condition that you simply come and join the life as it is. This is why we don’t turn local traditions into the show for tourists but simply let you join the life that runs the same way with or without visitors.
We are promoting such activities, which would respect natural characteristics of the area so that the unique cultural heritage of life on the island would become a recognizable product. Eco-tourism based on Gajeta Falkusa that would introduce tourists to the tradition and practices of sustainable coexistence of man and his maritime environment in Komiža, tasting traditional meals, kayaking and hiking as part of the offer, are just some of the initiatives that are sustainable. We observe the nature but we do not disturb it.We choose our activities because of the minimum impact they have on the nature.
Alternatura employs local guides. Our guides are aware of their surrounding and they are constantly providing the travellers with suggestions of how to minimize potential negative impacts to the environment and marine ecosystems.Beside the fact that this kind of employment brings benefits to the local community, local guides are familiar with the area and know the locals, which brings the best quality and necessary ingredients for the perfect Alternatura experience.We direct our travellers to local private accommodation providers. In this way our travellers contribute to the local economy and quality of life. While on tours we stop for a lunch in family restaurants and agro-tourisms. The guests have an opportunity to taste some of the typical homemade specialties of the region and at the same time help the local economy. We bring our guests back to fundamental values, that have became an alternative in this modern world, like: a host, a fireplace, fire, home cooking, a donkey, a goat, a kayak, flying, sailing, hiking, children, quiet, birds.
We cooperate with local cultural institutions and Environmental NGO’s like Association for Nature, Environment and Sustainable Development Sunce, NGO Blue world and Eco Museum Komiza – whose basic purpose is to converge the local values and preserve the identity of the local community. Our guides are active members of The Croatian Mountain Rescue Service ( GSS) , Hum HPD ( The Croatian Mountaineering Society Hum) and The Voluntary Fire Department Komiza.( DVD Komiza). We own a speed boat which is used for Rescue at sea ( EMERGENSEA) and as an aid for the Volunteer Fire Brigade, which is important because Vis is the furthest croatian inhabited island.
