The term gajeta originates from the times of Homer’s epic heroes.
Falkuša is an ancient wooden fishing boat, one of the central symbols of thousand year old fisheries tradition in Komiža. Gajeta falkuša is 9 m long and 2.55 m wide (without the removable strakes).It has a lateen sail and a jib, of an overall 90 m2 area.
Besides sailing you will walk along the footsteps of ancient Illyrian tribes, climb to the highest top of the island, enjoy the view over vineyards and olive groves, feel the opulence of herbs and taste unique island products. The island of Vis besides its natural beauty has very rich history, from the ancient times Vis is know as Greek polis. The Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Slavs, Venetians, Austrians, French and British have all controlled Vis at different times.You will have opportunity to visit the most important sites.
Every activity is guided professional. Prior experience in sailing and rowing is not a requirement; age limit for children is 11. Bring clothes for sailing and good shoes for walking. We have got a speed boat and van which guarantees additional security during the programme.Most of activities will be on the traditional sailing boat gajeta Falkuša.
Group size : 6-10 people
Each day is planned the evening before, giving you the ultimate flexibility to enjoy activities in the very best conditions. You will be the part of the group of 10 people maximum and we are not restricted to the normal schedules, we can be flexible according to your wishes. Every morning we will check the weather forecast which is very important for sailing activities. The schedule of activities may change depending on the weather conditions.
SAMPLE 8 DAYS ITINERARY :
DAY 1. Arrival, transfer from Vis harbour to Komiža;
Arrival to the private accommodation, welcome drink, program presentation and detailed arrangements.Welcome dinner.
DAY 2. Komiza -town walk and gajeta Falkusa introduction/sailing
Breakfast. After breakfast we will take Komiza town walk, you will visit all important sights including Fishermen museum and hear most important historical stories about the town, a long fishing tradition and Komizan people.
We will board on gajeta Falkusa and sail around Komiza bay. You will be introduced with gajeta Falkusa structure and start with various activities – managing with falkusa’s washboards-“falke”, operating with ropes and tools, learn how to make traditional knots and how to row. We will anchore in an attractive cove and have a lunch. You will hear interesting stories about the pirate attacks to Komizan fishermen and story about rowing regatta from Komiza to Palagruza island (42 miles in one way). Theory of sailing with lateen sail. Back to Komiza in the late afternoon hours. Free evening in Komiza- we can recommend you good restaurant in Komiza where you can taste local food.
DAY 3. Sailing on gajeta Falkusa around Bisevo island /Blue cave visit/village Poje
After breakfast we are going to depart to the island of Bisevo which is located 5 NM from Komiza.
Biševo leaves everyone breathless, the combination of natural phenomena, sandy bays, friendly islanders, the quality Biševo Plavac wine and other island products will remain in your lasting memory. On the way to Bisevo island you will have theory of sailing with lateen sail. We will anchore in the Mezzoporat bay and visit the Blue cave. After visiting Blue cave we will take a walk along Biševo plateau (2km slightly up the hill) to the village of Poje, where we will visit the church of St. Silvester- the story about Benedictin monks and old school. On the top of the island there is little agrotourism , where you can taste fresh fish, island vegatables, island wine and homemade liquers.We will descend to Porat bay (1km slightly down the hill), a sandy beach on the west side of the island facing the open sea.
On the way back we will hear the story about monk seal and about the American king of fish industry from Bisevo island. Sailing back to Komiza.. You will have free evening, but our van is on disposal to drop you to some agrotourism or restaurant in the inland or in Vis town.
DAY 4. Sailing south part of Vis island– Komiža /Stiniva bay/Green cave
Breakfast We will sail to the south direction of Vis island. .During the sailing, you will hear some interesting information about the turbulent history of the island and the natural beauties that can be best seen from the sea. The first important point is the bay Pizdica in which we can find a natural source of drinking water, after tasting the natural water we will visit the bay Pritiština, brief stay. Continuing sailing towards the bay Stiniva – the most beautiful and most attractive bay on the island of Vis and wider. Upon passing through a narrow passage the true beauty is revealed. Sailing towards islets Ravnik and Budihovac. A tour of the famous ‘Green cave’ which is located on the open-sea side of the islet Ravnik, known for the visible green beam of light that penetrates through the opening on its top and breaks on the sea surface. We will stop on Budihovac island and have a break, light lunch. Sailing back to Komiza. Dinner- cooking fun.
DAY 5. Relax day
Today we will take slow , after breakfast you can have a swim, read your favourite book explore the things that you haven’t seen on the island yet. Our van/jeep is on disposal, we can take you wherever you like to go. Enjoy your free day!
DAY 6. Sailing and fishing on gajeta Falkuša
After breakfast, we will check the weather forecast and according to wind direction decide where are we going to sail. Our plan today is fishing and learn how to use fishing tools. According to location of our catch we will stop in the closest bay to prepare ourselves tasty lunch. Free evening.
DAY 7. Vis discovery tour by land – from ancient times to the present
This is our last day together and it should be relaxing day. So, today we will take a tour of the island by jeep which will begin with historical explanations reaching back to ancient times until the present. We will visit the Tito’s cave, Hum peak (587m), former RAF airport, cricket field in Plisko poje, George III fort, military tunnel Parja and the town of Vis – sightseeing the Roman baths, mosaic pavements and Greek cemetary. In the inland we will have tasty lunch in the agrotourism. On the way back from Vis town we will visit famous wine cellar where you will taste the best island wines. Dinner at the house.
DAY 8.Departure in the morning; transfer to ferry/catamaran
